What is a Dirty Diamond?

It’s a common question that our professional sales team gets asked a lot – what is considered to be a dirty diamond? The answer is simple: it is either a rough diamond or a diamond that has not been cleaned in a while.

Rough diamonds are diamonds that have not yet been cut or polished. In essence, it is a diamond that has not yet been cut, polished, and placed in a setting that sits in a display case. Let’s say you purchase that diamond and after a few years of wear and tear, it becomes a dirty diamond once again.

The Most Popular Diamond Cuts

Diamond cuts are one of the most important elements that go into your diamond purchase. The cut accentuates the diamonds overall appearance. Even a small diamond can look sizes bigger when cut in such a way that projects a more brilliant appearance. On the other hand, the wrong cut can strip the diamond of its sparkle and brilliance.

How Do I Spot a Fake Diamond?

It’s unfortunate but true, fake diamonds exist and they look as authentic as the real thing. To keep you and your special someone from falling for a jewelry scam, it’s time to understand the warning signs that your precious diamond may not be genuine.

What is a Fake Diamond?

Protect Your Investments

It’s your worst nightmare coming to life. You have lost your wedding ring orengagement ring, you cannot find your diamond earrings or the diamond bracelet hegave you is now floating in the ocean after a quick swim. Things happen, peoplemisplace/lose jewlery even if they are near and dear to their heart.

A very good way to protect your jewelry is to make sure that you have it insured.Usually you can insure your jewelry through the jeweler that you bought it from orthrough your insurance company under your homeowner’s insurance or renter’sinsurance. A drawback to homeowner’s insurance is that it usually only covers a certainamount for jewelry and it usually only covers items that have been in a fire or have beenstolen. If you notice that a part of your diamond has fallen out of the setting, thatunfortunately would probably not be covered by homeowner’s insurance. I would suggest looking into insurance that fully covered your expensive jewelry.

There is insurance called Riders. Riders can be bought along with yourhomeowners insurance. It protects items that would most likely not be insured underyour homeowner’s insurance policy. Expensive jewelry, engagement rings, weddingbands, diamond earring, usually falls under this category. Then there is actual jewelry insurance that you can buy. Sometimes insurancecompanies offer this but if they don’t then you can purchase jewelry insurance from ajewelry insurance company (go figure right?). You jewelry would be fully covered fromtheft to damage to loss.

You can also cover your jewelry while traveling as well, eveninternational. This type of insurance is suggested for really big investments in jewelry. You want to protect as much as you can and be prepared for any type of situation thatmight happen to one of your most beautiful and loved pieces of jewelry.

Best Bling of 2011 Emmy Awards

You know you watched them, even if you do not want to admit it. The 2011 Emmy Awards show is one of the most watched awards show still to date. Yes, sometimes we actually do want to see who wins what and who’s speech is beyond crazy but we secretly want to watch to see who is wearing what and look at that fabulous jewelry.

It seems as though some of the biggest trends seen on the red carpet were classic diamonds, black jewelry and bright and bold jewelry. Gwyneth Paltrow wore a gorgeous black Pucci dress and paired it with black diamond earrings and black and white bracelets giving the whole outfit a classic, edgy look. Sofia Vergara sported the most beautiful, green emerald earrings. Heidi Klum wore a pair of bright and colorful flower earrings with a ring to match.

Kate Winslet wore long, diamond earrings that perfectly complemented her beautiful red gown. Amy Poehler and Emmy winner Julie Bowen also work black diamonds but paired it with white, sparkling diamonds to give an edgy yet classic look. One of the best looks of the entire evening (I think) was Nina Dobrev from Vampire Diaries. She wore a beautiful, strapless red dress with a diamond choker. She paired a bright color with a gorgeous diamond choker, how can you wrong with that look? The host of the Emmy awards, Jane Lynch, wore rubies and diamonds that completed her sparkling look. This year’s Emmy’s were filled with rubies, multi-colored jewelry, black and white diamonds, classic white diamonds and of course Sofia Vergara’s Columbian, green emerald earrings (which seemed as though they were the show stopper of the evening).

You cannot go wrong with any of these looks. I can’t wait to see what is in store for us next year!

Designing an Engagement Ring

Everyone thinks about that perfect moment. That moment when two people decide to spend the rest of their lives together. Such a special occasion deserves a beautiful and special ring.

When it comes to the engagement ring, there are many things to consider. What kind of diamond should you pick? What type of quality do you want when constructing the ring? What design do you choose for your engagement ring? So many questions but hopefully we can help you out.

When looking for that special diamond to put in a ring that symbolizes a union between two people you want to make sure that it is the best. There are four things to look for when deciding on a diamond and they are the 4Cs, cut, color, clarity and carat. You want to make sure that the diamond that you pick has minimal to no inclusions. Although almost all diamonds will have natural inclusions, the bigger they are the more the inclusions will interfere with the light that passes through the stone, diminishing its brilliance.

When it comes to the color of the stone, the less color the better unless it comes out of the ground a defined color like red, blue, pink, green or yellow. A diamond that is one of these colors is incredibly rare. Diamonds are measured in carats. Some people like huge diamond rings but beauty is within the eye of the beholder. Yes, the bigger the carat the bigger the diamond, but a beautiful diamond ring, big or not as big, is still gorgeous and symbolic of commitment and love. Last but not least of the 4Cs is cut which to me, is the best part of the ring design. The cut of a diamond gives that ring its unique look. A diamond can be cut into many shapes but four of the most common are brilliant cut, oval, pear and marquise. Each cut allows light to pass through the diamond differently, making that ring sparkle in such a unique way that it will make heads turn.

When choosing the metal for your engagement ring, it’s all in what you prefer. A lot of engagement rings are made of Gold or Platinum. The Gold can either be white, yellow or rose and either 18kt, 14kt or 9kt with 18kt being the preferred choice. If you decide to choose Platinum just note that it is significantly more expensive than Gold.

Now, when deciding on a ring design there are some things that you should consider. Is the ring practical to wear? Will it withstand everyday wear? Will it hold the stone securely? Do you love it? Even though these questions seem obvious you must remember that this ring is going to last forever and you want to love it forever as well.

September Birthstone – Sapphire

Many beautiful things happen in the month of September. The weather changes and fall comes around. The color of leaves begins to manifest into a golden hue, and the air even has a different feel, changing from a hot and humid temperature to a crisp and cool aura. One of the most gorgeous symbols of September is the Sapphire stone.

Sapphire is the stone for the 5th, 23rd and 45th wedding anniversaries. This clear turquoise gem is not only striking in color but is considered a symbol of wisdom and purity. The Sapphire does not have to be designated to beautiful earrings and elegant necklaces. This would also be the perfect stone for an extraordinary engagement ring. Prince Charles proposed to Princess Diana with a Sapphire engagement ring. Their son, Princess William proposed to Kate Middleton with that same stone and with their royal wedding being one of the most talked about weddings in years, that blue, Sapphire ring is one of the most noted engagement rings in years as well. Kings and queens preferred the Sapphire gem to any other stone because it represents truth, sincerity and faithfulness.

The Sapphire stone is extremely sturdy, coming only in second to hardness next to the Diamond and it is also the most spiritual of gems because according to tradition, Moses was given sapphire tablets to write the ten commandments on.

A beautiful sapphire engagement ring shines in a crowd and simply radiates the love between two people. Any girl would be lucky to receive a piece of Sapphire jewelry because love, tradition and deep meaning run throughout this unique and beautiful stone.

The Timeless Beauty of Watches

A watch is not just something to tell time, it is a piece of jewelry. Its elegant band and beautiful face can represent a special occasion such as an anniversary. The restoration of watches is important because many people want to keep their same watch because it means something to them as opposed to buying a new one. We love repairing a piece of jewelry, especially something that carries a lot of meaning to someone. It is not always about purchasing a new piece of jewelry but doing what you can to save a piece that is timeless.

With twenty one years of experience, our master jeweler puts a lot of knowledge into repairing watches and bring timeless pieces of jewelry back to life. Fixing a broken watch is a wonderful gift that shows how much you care. It is the perfect “special occasion gift” or to just simply say “I love you”.

Watches never seem to go out of fashion and it seems as though they age like wine, the older the better. Keeping an old watch is like holding on to precious memories and to keep that ancient watch working is keeping memories alive and ticking.

Jewelry is passed down within families, so keeping those pieces vibrant is a wonderful gift for future generations.
